Presidential Adviser on Governance Gail Teixeira yesterday commended the National Youth Parliament (NYP) which opened its 12th sitting, stating that it was no small achievement to be holding sessions for 12 years.
Speaking at the Princess Hotel event, Teixeira said the NYP “demystifies” parliament, shedding light on an aspect of government that is generally not understood. She said it also provides a training ground for aspiring parliamentarians to become familiarized with the procedure of parliament, while at the same time equipping them with life skills. Many past participants have gone on to become prestigious members of financial, political, social and other institutions and organizations, she added, noting that the experience also improves self esteem and general perception of self.
According to Teixeira, these skills will enable the next generation of leaders to “pick up the mantle”, and ensure that democracy remains institutionalized in Guyana, guaranteeing that
