President of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) KA Juman Yassin yesterday reiterated at a press conference yesterday held at Olympic House, High Street, that the GOA did not receive any money from the government towards the Guyana team’s participation at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
According to Yassin, the Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, made statements recently about providing funding to the GOA.
According to Yassin, Kumar’s statements were not accurate since no funds were allocated to the GOA for that purpose.
“When I met with my treasurer to discuss about this after I heard about the scandal, this was proven to be inaccurate. We did not receive any money from sport ministry,” Yassin said. Treasurer of the GOA, Garfield Wiltshire, in a brief telephone interview with Stabroek Sport, promised to ventilate the matter at a later date since he was unable to do so yesterday. When contacted Kumar maintained that the government had given funding to the GOA.
According to Kumar he is positive that the GOA received the money but said he could not give detailed information on how it was spent.
He added that he was on assignment out of town and therefore he was unable to give any relevant information towards the issue but promised to get the cheque receipts to show that the GOA did indeed receive funding from government.
