The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) yesterday launched its internet service for smartphones, including Android and Apple’s iPhone and iPad devices, partnering with three retailers to bring the mobile internet experience when there is no hotspot availability.
The launch took place at the GT&T’s BlackBerry store on Brickdam, with Starr Computers, Global Technology and Courts, the three retailers that have teamed with the telephone company on the new service.
The service can be acquired through three plans – daily for $199; weekly for $999; and monthly for $2,299.
Allison Dundas, Manager of the BlackBerry store, said the company recognised the need to embrace technology and that is why it decided to integrate this new service into its suite of offerings. She said that there has been a huge growth in smartphone subscribers to the company and called it the company’s fastest growing sector. She said that the service is reliable and affordable.
Acting CEO of GT&T Major General (rtd) Joe Singh said benefits will accrue to the users of the service, in terms of its access to the many options smartphones offer. He added that it is another step in the direction of providing citizens with state-of-the-art technology.
He said that as the technology gets more advanced, it is hoped that the government will see the wisdom of providing greater spectrum to allow for 4G and LTE technology to be introduced.
