Marian Academy yesterday observed the 31st anniversary of International Day of Peace in a ceremony of offerings, tribute and praise at the school’s auditorium.
Principal Sister Marie Harper prayed for God to “Protect us from the evils of injustice, prejudice, exploitation, conflict and war, help us to put away mistrust, bitterness and hatred.”
There were also remarks from the Catholic clergy, peace hymns by the school’s choir, one minute of silence and reflection and ringing of the ‘Peace Bell’. There were also presentations from a representative of the Environmental Protection Agency, while the school’s Environmental Club and other members of the student body presented peace posters and other tokens.
Head Prefect Nicholas Hickens in closing remarks, said, “This day is meant to get people globally not just thinking of peace, but doing something about it… As we reflect on the true meaning of today’s observance, let us commit to act as peace messengers – not only through our words but through our deeds.”
The first observance of World Peace Day was held on September 21, 1982. The United Nations declared such a day to commemorate the absence of war and the implementations of international peace and humanitarian aid. This year’s theme is “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future.”
