The Carib Beer Heroes Cup winds down this weekend with just a single game between the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF). Having started in the latter half of 2011, this year’s competition has been prolonged due to bad weather. The Heroes Cup has both thrilled and disappointed, with new players emerging and some of the more established players excelling while others fell below par.
The final match has little context, as second placed DCC, gaining full points from this match will be stranded well short of Malteenoes Sports Club.
DCC’ s position was asserted mainly due to the good work of skipper Christopher Barnwell who has scored 373 runs in the tournament at an average of 62 while the destructive Derwin Christian struck two centuries in the 493 runs he’s scored thus far, at an average of 54. Left arm spinner Totaram Bishun has been the tournament’s stand out performer with the ball, collecting 31 wickets at an average of 13.
The GDF find themselves sixth in the points standings, despite boasting a side with players who have played first class cricket.
Fast Bowlers Trevon Garraway and Gilford Moore have taken just 12 wickets between them, although Shemroy Barrington has been exceptional with both bat and ball, taking 16 wickets and scoring 343 runs at an average of 49.
The teams meet at Queenstown to conclude their two-day assignments and hopefully add to their final tally of runs and wickets, before moving on to limited overs cricket shortly.
