A labourer was yesterday put on $50,000 bail after he denied being found with cannabis.
Sherwin Gordon, of 409 Kaneville, told Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court that he was going to a shop to purchase an item when he was approached by the police, who put him into a van. He said he was later told of the offence he was alleged to have committed.
Gordon, who was accused of possession of six grammes of cannabis, had initially pleaded guilty, but the magistrate recorded a not guilty plea after he gave his account.
It was alleged that he committed the offence on September 23, in Georgetown. Details of the police’s case against Gordon were not presented to the court.
Bail was set in the sum of $50,000, after the prosecution indicated that there were no objections to bail, but asked that the sum be substantial.
The case was then transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court for October 2.
