Dear Editor,
In three of the four Sunday newspapers I noticed the public awareness campaign for the Guyana Population & Housing Census 2012. It is commendable that this event is occurring on the 10th year mark, however the debut public awareness advertisements could have been more reflective of the diversity of our nation. Surely this debut in the print media could have been conceptualized and designed to appeal to widest cross-section of the people of Guyana. In the usage of images of people the campaign limits itself to the perceptional evaluation/s of the population in this polarized time.
In other countries they use silhouettes to allude to the various diversities in society. Can a way be found to encourage all of us to participate in the census in one advertisement at one time that is more in keeping with our ‘One people, One Nation, One Destiny‘ motto.
How do the campaign designers plan to reflect our diverse and multi-faceted society in a unified and unifying manner?
Yours faithfully,
Elizabeth Deane-Hughes
