The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs underscored the importance of Amerindian contribution to national development, when it joined scores of residents and well-wishers at Annai, Region Nine for its Heritage Celebration.
A Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said Permanent Secretary Nigel Dharamlall and other members of the ministry’s team were treated to a packed programme which included a cultural presentation, beauty pageant, sports and culinary delights.
In his address Dharamlall said, “Amerindians are important to our government and that is why we continue to support [your] endeavours… we will also continue to support heritage activities across the country.” He also noted that every year the ministry injects “huge sums” into village celebrations because it recognises that heritage and identity is what unites the nation.
Later, the Annai men and women’s team copped the winning prize in a football match held as part of the celebration.
According to GINA, the ministry presented the village with $250,000 for the celebrations. Prior to that $4.8 million was used to construct a benab which will be commissioned soon.
The ministry’s team stopped briefly to celebrate with residents of Swan during their village celebrations. The month-long celebrations will close with a dinner reception at the Regency Suites planned for Friday.
