Dear Editor,
Amongst the objectives listed in the Constitution of the Guyana Media Proprietors Association are the following:
“(i) To champion the cause of media freedom and media responsibility in Guyana.”
“(xi) To consolidate and express common positions on public issues affecting the media in Guyana.”
“(xiii) To represent members in dealing with other organisations and interests, e.g. intellectual property issues, relationships with advertising agencies, etc.”
“(xv) To promote national awareness and understanding of the role of media in Guyanese society.”
“(xxv) Generally to undertake all such activities as are likely to benefit the media sector in Guyana and serve the public interest.”
Kindly relate the above to the resounding silence of the Association regarding the current dialogue about the Broadcasting Act No. 17 of 2011, assented to on September 27, 2011, not to mention the reported ‘piracy’ of intellectual property.
Yours faithfully,
E B John
