GPL’s ‘Power Watch,’ published in the major newspapers in Guyana, is inaccurate, and quite frankly, a waste of resources. I reside at Number 68 Village on the Corentyne, and cannot recall the last time that actual power outages coincided with what was scheduled and advertised.
Last week’s Power Watch, for in-stance, listed no power outage for my area, yet we were subjected to multiple hours of blackout. This week’s Power Watch also did not have any power outage scheduled for my area, and again, we were subjected to blackout on Monday evening for over two hours.
This has been a perpetual, repeated pattern in Berbice, and a problem that GPL’s senior management must be familiar with. Why then, does GPL persist in publishing its Power Watch for the Berbice area? At the very least, the constant departures from this schedule, and the multiple hours of unscheduled power outages, suggest that this entity and its management reside in a fictitious illusory world, one that is fantastic, but sadly unreal, where the residents of Berbice suffer power outages only once or twice a month.
The reality is that this entity that often refers to itself as “resource-limited,” is wasting its valuable resources by publishing a ‘Power Watch’ that residents of Berbice, and possibly other areas, cannot rely on. If it is not dependable, then what is the point? Is it just an aspirational exercise, or a list of the company’s goals. Then perhaps it should simply be renamed the GPL Wish List.
