Guyana Power and Light in a statement today said that a car owned by a GPL loss reduction supervisor in Berbice was set on fire yesterday and it is suspected that the act was perpetrated by a person who had been accused of stealing electricity.
Noting that there are many employees who put themselves at risk to prevent electricity theft, GPL acknowledged that there are others who are corrupt and work with the perpetrators.
“The company dismisses these corrupt employees forthwith, and seeks criminal prosecution against them. GPL will do everything in its power to bring perpetrators to justice, and will fully support its honest and hard-working employees”, GPL said.
GPL asserted that it will not give up the fight against power thieves and warned that new technology is going to be deployed in the battle.
“Amongst other initiatives, the company is moving to implement sophisticated technology that will easily identify customers who are stealing. The technology will provide on-line real time information twenty fours a day, which will enable GPL to respond instantly. In addition, the system will record vital statistics which will be presented as evidence in court. This technology has had huge success in curbing electricity theft in many countries world-wide”, the statement added.
GPL called on members of the public to report electricity theft and said this could be done on its hotline 225-5251.
