Veteran union leader Komal Chand was returned as president of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU).
GAWU stated in a release yesterday that following the conclusion of its 20th Delegates’ Congress, on August 28, its 52-member General Council met for the first time on September 29, and Chand was returned as president.
Others elected unanimously to the union’s Central Executive Committee were: Jankie Persaud, honorary president; Uranie Heeram, vice president; Seepaul Narine, general secretary; Mohamad Ahamad, assistant general secretary; Derek Thakur, organising secretary; Aslim Singh, international affairs secretary and Rooplall Persaud, treasurer.
Michael Inderdatt, Walter Raghoo, Bevon Sinclair, Harvey Tambron, Abrahim Nagamootoo, Janice Leander-Fowler and Bickram Singh were elected committee members.
The release said that at Saturday’s meeting, members hailed the positive performance of the sugar industry over the past few weeks.
Described as a party stalwart, Chand has been at the helm of GAWU for a number of years and fought many battles with the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuco) over workers’ rights. He has also criticized the entity as regards the management of the corporation resulting in poor production performances recorded by GuySuco in recent years.
