-home to be built for prison guard maimed in Camp St jailbreak
The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T) on Monday donated $1M to Habitat for Humanity Guyana Inc. (HFHG) to assist in the completion of its latest project—the construction of a home for prison officer Roxanne Winfield, who was critically wounded in the February 23rd, 2002 Camp Street prison escape.
GT&T Public Relations Officer (PRO) Allison Parker said that the company realises the great work HFHG has been doing and was pleased to present the cheque to the organisation.
She stated that of the 17 years the organisation has been in operation, GT&T has consistently been making yearly donations to support its efforts because it believes in their cause, which is to upgrade persons’ standard of living.
She revealed that the purpose of this latest donation is to facilitate the construction of a residence for Winfield, who suffered paralysis as a result of injuries she sustained during the jailbreak, in which she was shot. The escape ushered in an unprecedented crime spree that lasted for years.
Winfield lost a portion of her brain, rendering her unable to speak, and to use all of her left side.
It is hoped that the construction of the home will do much to help her.
An affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, HFHG is a Non-Governmental, Non-Profit Ecumenical Christian Housing Ministry, whose primary mandate is the eradication of poverty housing in Guyana. In its 15 years of operations, the organisation has completed over 40 houses for low-income families all across Guyana.
