The members of the Commission of Inquiry into the July 18 shooting of protestors near the Mackenzie-Wismar Bridge, at Linden will be visiting the town today.
This was revealed on Monday by Chairman of the Commission Justice Lensley Wolfe. He noted that members of the commission will depart Georgetown at 9am.
A request was made by APNU attorney Basil Williams to travel in a convoy but attorney Nigel Hughes, who is representing the interests of the families of the three men killed at Linden, stated that he was not interested in doing so. However, Justice Wolfe indicated that anyone who wishes to travel in this manner could do so.
The commissioners are scheduled to leave the Supreme Court at 9am and are expected to arrive at the Kara Kara Bridge at 10:30am.
Under its Terms of Reference, the Commission of Inquiry is to determine whether the fatal shootings were committed by the police deployed on the bridge and, if so, who gave the order to fire and whether the police had justification for the use of lethal force at the scene. The instructions given to the detachment as well any instructions that may have been given by the Home Affairs Minister to the police force to maintain law and order in Linden immediately before, during and immediately after the events on July 18, form part of the terms of the inquiry as well.
Apart from the shooting, the commission’s mandate includes inquiring into the nature of the violence and destruction and its perpetrators that immediately followed the shootings.
