Guyana’s Chelsea Edghill has teamed up with South Korean Kyojin Ku to reach the final of the Canadian Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Open girls’ team event in Markham, Ontario Canada.
According to a press release from the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Edghill and her partner defeated much higher ranked players on their way to the final. The event is an International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Premium World Junior Circuit and is being sponsored by Butterfly.
The pair of Edghill/Ku defeated Canada 1 3-0 with Edghill defeating Natasha Carr-Harris 3-2 in a tough five setter.
In their second match Edghill/Ku defeated an ITTF/North American Combination by a 3-2 margin with Edghill picking up a critical second match by defeating Isabel Chu 11-5, 11-9, 7-11, 7-11, 11-9 after losing to Catherine Dauplaise 6-11, 11-6, 3-11, 5-11.
In their third match the pair overcame Canada 3 by a 3-1 margin with Edghill losing to Justina Yeung 1-11, 8-11, 9-11. Edghill, however, bounced back to close out the tie with an 11-4, 6-11, 11-9, 3-11, 8-11 win over Sheree Zheng after Ku had won her singles match and the pair of Ku and Edghill had won the girls doubles encounter.
In the semifinal played yesterday the Edghill/Ku combination defeated a USA/Canada combination by a 3-1 margin with Edghill losing to Crystal Wang 11-13, 7-11, 9-11 while Ku won both her singles matches and then teamed up with Edghill to win the doubles.
In the other semifinal the Puerto Rico combination of Adriana Diaz/ Rivera Lineris defeated the USA/Canada team by 3-1 to set up an exciting final tomorrow.
Edghil will also participate in the singles event where she is seeded number 1 in group 5 along with Justina Yeung of Canada, Rivera Lineris of Puerto Rico and Lily Meng also of Canada.
Meanwhile, national junior player, Sachin Panday, who recently migrated to Canada, has been endorsed by the GTTA and will participate in the boy’s 18-years and under singles today, the release stated.
