Ricky Lashley was yesterday accused of throwing a pot of rice at his common-law wife, rendering her unconscious.
Lashley, 34, of 348 Cummings Street, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded not guilty.
He was released on self bail on the condition that he and Nikesha Poolin, with whom he shares five children, seek counselling.
It was alleged that on October 2, in Georgetown, Lashley unlawfully and maliciously wounding Poolin, causing her to be in an unconscious state.
Prosecutor Winneth Hubbard stated that Lashley had returned home and asked Poolin if she was finished cooking. Hubbard said that Poolin told him that she was not and he became annoyed and threw a pot of rice at her, hitting her in the face. She was rendered unconscious, as a result.
Hubbard said persons nearby heard the commotion and rushed to Poolin’s aide. They found her unconscious and took her to the hospital, where she regained consciousness.
As a result, Lashley was later arrested and charged.
Hubbard had no objections to bail being granted, but asked that it be accompanied by the condition Lashley would find an alternative residence, since he and Poolin live together at the same address, pending the determination of the matter.
The Chief Magistrate then granted the prosecution’s request and released Lashley on self-bail, while also ordering that the couple seek counselling from either Red Thread or Help and Shelter.
They were both placed on a bond to keep the peace pending the determination of the matter.
The case was adjourned to November 30, when it will be called at Court One for reports and fixtures.
