Dear Editor,
The new Housing Scheme at Section D Non Pariel on the East Coast of Demerara has been completed since December 2010. A large number of persons who were allotted house lots in that area have commenced construction and taken up residency within the area. The residents of this area are still waiting for basic infrastructure to be put in place, namely water and proper roads.
Section D Non Pariel is a low income scheme since the cost of one house lot ranges from five hundred thousand to eight hundred thousand dollars for 50×100 in size. At present all the residents must pay $4,000 for one 400 gallon tank of water purchased from different water suppliers. Water is a very essential and necessary commodity for those who are now constructing homes and for the over 25 persons who have already taken up residence in the area. These residents have children going to school, husbands who have to go to work very early, even in the backdam and wives coping with the very expensive water for household chores and bathroom use.
It is not fair for the residents who have high mortgage payments to meet to continue to pay for very expensive water supplied by these unscrupulous vendors. We are beseeching GWI to supply water to this scheme, and the Housing Minister to use his good offices to ensure immediate action so that residents of Section D will have adequate water for themselves and their children.
Yours faithfully,
Parbattie Jawahir, et al
