Police shot and injured a prisoner yesterday morning after he escaped from the Georgetown Public Hospital where he had been admitted as a patient.
The man has been identified as 28-year-old Terry Andrew Joseph, also known as ‘Spanish Man’.
According to a police press release, Joseph escaped at about 01:10 hrs and was seen by ranks of a mobile police patrol that was in the area. During efforts to arrest him, he was shot and injured to the left thigh.
Hospital sources told this newspaper that the prisoner escaped from the ward through a window, managing to flee from the prison guard who was assigned to look over him.
The prisoner has been readmitted to the hospital and remains under guard.
Police on September 12 had issued a wanted bulletin for Joseph in relation to robbery under arms and piracy.
The release had said that he was suspected to be part of a gang which carried out a series of pirate attacks on fishermen in the Pomeroon River and the Waini in Region One.
