The Demerara Volleyball Association in collaboration with the female U-19 national team will today stage a volleyball extravaganza at the Ministry of Education sports ground (formerly GNS ground) from 11am.
The event, made possible by the intervention of the National Sports Commission and the Guyana Volleyball Federation is being used as an opportunity for the volleyball fraternity, especially those within the Demerara area to get together and have fun while playing volleyball on a beach volleyball surface (sand).
According to a release from the DVA,a number of young females will match skills with their senior counterparts.
There will also be other games showcasing senior players and mixed teams.
A Bank of Guyana (BoG) Sports club team will also participate in today’s event.
One of the objectives of today’s exercise, is to encourage the organization of more such events where organizations and non conventional volleyball teams can participate in the game and help to spread the game across the Demerara region.
Even though the conditions will not be ideal for training and proper development of skills, coaches will be on hand to utilize the event as an opportunity to develop the competitive and cohesive skills of their girls while allowing them the opportunity to give back to their large support base.
The event has received the support of Director of Sport Neil Kumar who indicated that the NSC will be willing to assist with the development of beach and school volleyball.
The release also stated that a Brazilian contingent of about 40 youths will be on show at the National Gymnasium from November 15.
Both the GVF and the DVA said they see today’s event as a golden opportunity to generate new interest in the game through families and other supporters who are expected to be a part of the today’s activities.
