National chess champion Taffin Khan heads a three member Guyana team which is participating in the third annual Umada Cup tournament in Suriname a release from the Guyana Chess Federation has stated.
The other two players are Maria Thomas and Anthony Drayton.
The nine round tournament which commenced October 3 will end today.
The event is divided into the Challenger and Open categories and the three Guyanese are participating in the Challenger category.
The Umada Cup tournament is organized under the auspices of President of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) Kirsan Ilyumzhinov in collaboration with the Confederacion de Ajedrez para America. The Guyana body was invited to participate by the Suriname Federation which is hosting the tournament.
Seventeen territories mainly from the Caribbean region were invited and over 50 chess players including two FIDE masters are participating. Jamaica, Trinidad, Guyana, Aruba and the host country have fielded players for the event. The annual tournament was held previously in Trinidad and Barbados.
