Colin Ming staved off a strong challenge from Kassim Khan to win the second annual United Insurance Golf tournament Saturday at the Lusignan Golf Course.
Both players shot a net 66 but Ming, playing off a 13 handicap, for gross 76, performed better on the back nine to squeeze past Khan (8-74-66).
Khan had an added incentive when he copped the prize for the best gross, 74, edging out Alfred Mentore who had gross 76.
Mentore finished third overall with a net 68 from a gross 76 playing off an eight handicap. The fourth place went to Fazil Haniff with a net 69 from a gross 79 playing off 10 a handicap.
Mark Lashley was Nearest to the Pin.
It was a welcome return to form for Ming, a regular top performer in his flight at the Guyana Open.
The club’s premier open tournament will take place in just under a month’s time and already golfers are fine tuning preparation for the event.
Jerome Khan, president of the Lusignan Golf Club praised United Insurance for sponsoring the tournament for a second time.
“We look forward to a long partnership with United Insurance as we continue our quest to popularize golf locally,” Khan added.
Gail Robinson, Administrative Manager of John Fernandes Insurance Service (JFIS), agent for United Insurance said the Barbados-based Insurance Company was extremely pleased to sponsor the tournament.
Also present at the tournament were JFIS Supervisor Andrew Shanks and Clerk Gregory Roberts.
She said United Insurance looks forward to sponsoring the tournament again next year. Meanwhile, golfers will be in action again Saturday in the Players Championship sponsored by Citizen’s Bank.
