Woman threatened by suspect in mechanic’s murder

 – seeks refuge in police station

As police continued to search for the suspect in the stabbing death of Alberttown mechanic, Brian Assannah, a woman who was being threatened by the man earlier on Sunday, remains at the police station as she fears for her life.

Assannah, popularly known by his middle name ‘Sule’, was knifed to death by another man who was being arrested by a police officer at the corner of Fourth and Light streets in Alberttown around 8:30 on Sunday evening.

Reports are that earlier in the day on Sunday, the woman made a report to the police station in the area that the man, who is well known to the police and residents as a “walk and sell vendor”, wanted to kill her. The man, known as ‘Dougla’ and the woman, share a common-law relationship and were reportedly embroiled in bitter argument on Sunday during which he threatened to kill her.

According to a source, the woman’s parents advised her to remain at the police station yesterday since based on information they received, the man wanted her dead. The woman has since taken up residence at the police station at the advice of her father and the lawmen as the suspect remains at large. Her father was also worried about the entire incident since another of his children was stabbed to death some time ago.

The police stated on Sunday night that a report of threatening language was made against the suspect at the Alberttown Police Station earlier on Sunday.

He was seen riding past the police station Sunday night and was challenged by a Rural Corporal who was on duty at the station and who attempted to arrest him. However, the suspect resisted and rode away. It was after he was pursued by the officer that Assannah encountered the man and the officer and subsequently met his death.

According residents in the area, soon after the man attacked Assannah, he rode out of Fourth Street with the Rural Corporal hot on his heels. The man was headed for the Bourda Market area. A resident noted that a young woman in the area observed the man washing a knife in a drain following which he rode across Church Street and disappeared in the market area.

“Some boys see this man riding out Alberttown looking calm but nobody didn’t know he jus kill Sule… If we did know he would certainly not be wherever he is,” the angry woman stated.

She said the man is well known around the city since he sells various articles including watches, passport holders and wallets among other items.

Assannah’s mother, Lurlene Mingo, said yesterday that she has been in touch with the police at Alberttown and she is confident that the lawmen will apprehend the suspect. She said that based on information she received, the suspect frequents the community and once lived in the area.”The police know he. So I know they goin catch him,” she said.

A post-mortem examination is expected to be performed on Assannah’s body tomorrow.
