Dear Editor,
Twenty-year-old `Sule‘ Brian Assannah of Alberttown “was killed on Sunday after he attempted to assist a police officer who was arresting another man” as reported by Stabroek News on Monday 8 October 2012”.
`Sule‘ Brian would have celebrated his 21st birthday on Wednesday but was slashed to the neck by the suspect, whom police identified as a horse-cart operator.
My sympathies to this young man and his entire family for this tragic loss.
In these times where do you find a young man eager and public spirited enough to help a police officer arrest a suspect? This is a pitiful and soul searching tragedy. His parents undoubtedly taught him good values to have motivated his actions.
But his parents and family do not have to suffer all over again burying on his birthday in a derelict Le Repentir cemetery. The Guyana Government needs to surgically remove the administration of the cemetery and put it under an independent administration.
When all the facts have been checked out by the Social Services department or whichever government Ministry they should bear all this young man’s funeral expenses. Further his parents should get some monthly compensation with inquiries whether any siblings are of an age for possible entry into the armed forces if they so desire. Good must come from bad.
I hope Minister Rohee or Commissioner Brumell attends the funeral.
Let’s see what the PPP/C government does. APNU and AFC should support such a parliamentary motion for compensation to the family.
The young man’s actions were brave and noble and need to be addressed similarly.
The public/government’s response will ensure Guyanese heroism does not go to waste. RIP
Yours faithfully,
Sultan Mohamed
