When this year’s Courts Pee Wee (under 11) football tournament which involves 16 primary schools kicks off at the Thirst Park Ground on October 20, the students and their schools will have some extra motivation.
Not only will the top school receive a trophy and bragging rights but all the participating schools will be rewarded with two Coby boom boxes each to tune into the Interaction Radio Instruction (IRI) progamme which is produced by NCERD. Further, as an added incentive for reaching the semi finals, the top-four schools will also receive Acer desktop flat screen computers.
During a media briefing yesterday in Courts’ boardroom on Main Street, Marketing Director of the furniture giant, Molly Hassan, stated that trophies were not enough and as such Courts saw the need to give the young footballers who will be representing their schools an extra push.
“When we reviewed the tournament, we said what can we do to further motivate the students, we needed to give them an extra push,” said Hassan.
“So we decided that all 16 schools will receive two boom boxes each while the top four schools will get desk top computers.”
Hassan also stated that the prizes will be handed over to the Ministry of Education to distribute upon completion of the tournament.
Troy Mendonca, Director of Petra Organization which is coordinating and co sponsoring the competition, provided an overview of the tournament along with the fixtures and stated that his organization will provide balls, small goals and goal keeping gloves for each school.
Nicholas Fraser, a representative of the Ministry of Education, thanked Courts for adding the extra incentives for the students and stated that the boom boxes will be utilized for the IRI programme while the computers will aid in numerous ways.
Fraser also wished each team success.
Prizes will also be awarded to the player with the most goals and the MVP of the tournament.
The schools participating in the tournament are Marian Academy, Reedemer Primary, Success Primary, Enterprise Primary, South Ruimveldt Primary, F.E. Pollard Primary, Tucville Primary, West Ruimveldt Primary, St. Margaret’s Primary, North Georgetown Primary, Green Acres Primary, St. Pius Primary, St. Sidwell’s Primary, Sophia Primary, Ketley Primary and St. Gabriel Primary.
The tournament will conclude on December 1.
