-Local shooters occupy top four positions
Guyana’s Lennox Braithwaite captured the lead as Guyanese marksmen stamped their authority on day two of the Individual Competition of the West Indies Fullbore shooting championships at the Timehri rifle ranges yesterday.
The local shooters have taken the top four position after two stages were completed yesterday at 300 and 500 yards with the 600 yards slated to be shot today, the final day of the individual competition.
Braithwaite won at 300 yards with a possible 50 points and 3V-bulls and ended the shortened day with a grand aggregate of 200 points with 6 V-bulls.
Guyana’s captain Mahendra Persaud held the overall second position with 199 points with 20 V-bulls, followed by vice captain Dylan Fields third with 198 points and 15 V-bulls and Ransford Goodluck fourth 198-14.
Jamaican Aubrey Yee-Sang was fifth with 196-17 while his compatriots – first day leader John Nelson slipped to sixth place with 195-15 and Jose Nunez seventh with 195-13.
Trinidadian Norris Gomez held eighth place with 194-14, Barbadian Marlon King ninth with 193-12 and Anderson Perry of Anderson Perrry tenth on 193-11.
At the 300 yards range Yee-Sang and Nunez shot 49-6 while Persaud and King ended on 49-5 and Goodluck 49-3.
Gomez won at 500 yards as six shooters shot possibles.
The Trinidadian shot 35 points with 6 V-bulls edging out Fields on 50-5.
The other top shooters in that stage were Persaud 35-4, while Braithwaite, Goodluck and Karen Anderson of Jamaica ended on 35-3 apiece.
Ryan Sampson, Secretary of the Guyana National Rifle Association said the shooters were unable to compete at 600 yards but that range will be shot today while there will also be the long range events at 900 and 1000 yards.
Six countries – Antigua/Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and host Guyana are competition in the championships.
The team matches will take place on Saturday and Sunday.
The action will get cracking at 10:00 hours today.
