The Ministry of Health is seeking to secure scholarships in pathology for students interested in this discipline to fill the shortage of personnel in this field.
Minister of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran said several months ago he had made inquiries into securing scholarships in this field, and the issue had been taken to Cabinet.
The minister said efforts had been made to secure tuition in Cuba where many local doctors have been trained, according to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release.
Ramsaran said specialists are also needed in psychiatry and surgery. He also pointed out that specialist training programmes in areas of medicine, paediatrics, neonatology, neurology and oncology are currently being offered at the Georgetown Hospital with support from overseas universities.
Dr Nehaul Singh is one of two pathologists in the health system. Dr Singh is based at the Georgetown hospital.
