Speaker of the National Assembly Raphael Trotman will be meeting with members of the press assigned to cover sittings of the National Assembly today in the Parliament Chamber.
According to a press release from Parliament Office the meeting seeks to create a forum for the discussion of matters relating to coverage of Sittings and the rules, practice and procedure of the National Assembly. It will be held from 10am to 12 pm.
The National Assembly resumed its work on Thursday after its annual parliamentary recess and immediately convened the Parliamentary Management Committee. The Chief Whips are working to agree on the date for the next sitting of the Assembly and a number of other committees will be convened shortly, the Parliament Office said.
Before going into recess the Assembly referred a number of matters to Special Select Committees: these are: Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2012; Local Government Commission Bill 2012; Municipal and District Councils (Amendment) Bill 2012; Fiscal Transfer Bill 2012; Deeds Transfer Bill 2012; Deeds Registry (Amendment) Bill 2012 and the Resolution on the Former Presidents (Benefits and Other Facilities).
The Resolution on Guyana’s Follow-Up to Commitments made to the United Nations Human Rights Council with regard to holding consultations on three matters: The Abolition of Corporal Punishment in Schools, the Abolition of the Death Penalty and the Decriminalisation of Consensual Adult same sex relations and Discrimination against lesbians, gays, bi-sexual and transgender persons and the petition on behalf of the students, alumni and friends of the University of Guyana for the appointment of a newly constituted council to ensure that the university has a governing body that has the capacity to transform the institution into a truly national asset.
The Special Select Committees will be established in one week’s time to start work on these matters, the release said.
