The Indian Cultural Centre will screen the 1977 film Bhumika: The Role today from 5.30 pm at its Lot 67 New Haven, Bel Air, Georgetown premises.
According to a press release, the film, directed by acclaimed director Shyam Benegal tells the story of Usha (Smita Patil) who is from a poor family but who has talents as a singer and actress. Her mother encourages her to go with an older man who then exploits her in the film industry. Usha meets and marries another man who abuses her. She then escapes and ends up in other complex relationships which oppress her. In the end, she tries to seek freedom by coming back to being an actress. The film is broadly based
on the memoirs of the well-known Marathi stage and screen actress of the 1940s, Hansa Wadkar.
The film also stars Amol Palekar, Anant Nag, Naseeruddin Shah and Amrish Puri. It won two National Film Awards and the Filmfare Award for Best Movie. Admission is free
