Narine grabs 3-21 but Knight Riders lose to Daredevils in Champions League T20

CENTURION, South Africa, CMC – Highly-touted West Indies off-spinner Sunil Narine produced the best match figures of three for 21 off four overs but his effort could not prevent Delhi Daredevils from beating Kolkata Knight Riders by 52 runs in the Champions League Twenty20 tournament here yesterday.

Trinidadian Narine, one of the heroes of the champion West Indies team in the recent ICC T20 championship in Sri Lanka, showed his mettle in his very first ball in the sixth over when he removed Mahela Jayawardene, the Daredevils captain.

Jayawardene, who also led Sri Lanka in their 36-run defeat against West Indies in the World T20 final in Colombo last Sunday, was bowled off stump for 21 as he essayed a cut.

Narine also bowled Unmukt Chand for the topscore of 40 and added the scalp of wicket-keeper Naman Ojha without scoring but the Daredevils managed to score 160 for eight off 20 overs after they were sent in at SuperSport Park.

The Knight Riders were under severe early pressure, losing internationals, captain Gautam Gambhir and New Zealander Brendon McCullum, both without scoring as they plunged to three for three in the second over.

And with another star player in South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis forced to retire hurt before he, too, had scored, they struggled all the way and were limited to 108 for seven.

Another member of the West Indies T20 squad, fast bowling all-rounder Andre Russell of Jamaica did not make the Daredevils’ final XI.
