Dear Editor,
You have elections in Guyana, alright, but between elections the spirit and essence of democracy are totally missing. In this scheme of things, the voices of the people are ignored or (to Ramotar’s govt.) they don’t matter.
How else could you explain de facto Prime Minister Luncheon’s dictum: ‘We are going to defend Rohee to the hilt’ (“we are ready to rumble”). Luncheon’s position is at once defiant – but it is more than that – it is the equivalent of saying: “We don’t care about the norms of democratic rule”.
How could any reasonable practitioner of democracy not just ignore the parliament’s no-confidence motion in Rohee – but pour scorn on the parliament and the will of the people’s representatives? This kind of thing doesn’t happen in a democracy.
Luncheon’s mindset is infinitely worse than the other members of the Cabinet. His mind is stuck in a by-gone era. He does more harm to the Guyanese nation than the president himself. You see he is a law unto himself. And no president – not Jagdeo, not Ramotar – has the courage to curb his power.
Recall the British Govt’s offer of a gift of several million dollars to reform and retrain the police force. The Brits asked for quasi-supervisory authority to oversee the spending of their money and the reform process. Now the crime rate is out of control and the police are poorly trained and lack basic resources. So what manner of man would refuse the Brits’ offer? Who pays with their lives every day for this terrible state of affairs? Not Luncheon (he has drivers and armed guards). It is the Guyanese working men and women.
People in Guyana: Your struggle against your govt is just. Luncheon and Rohee should be retired – and let them live happily ever after on their nice pensions. Do not give up your just struggle.
Thousands of commuters suffered (and the people of this nation deeply regret their hardship and pain) – but the real provocateur who created this problem is a deeply insensitive man. A man who simply does not understand how democracy works. His name is Roger Luncheon – de facto Prime Minister of Guyana.
Yours faithfully,
Mike Persaud
