There were to be no further upsets as round one of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Queensway knockout competition was completed yesterday with Vikings, 3rd Class and Ace Warriors all being easily dispatched from the tournament. The teams failed to make use of their allowance for guest players and their usual players looked inept against more seasoned opposition.
Playing at Camp Ayanganna, the Vikings batted first after winning the toss against the Guyana Defence Force and were dismissed for 102 in 27 overs.
Left arm spinner Dennis Legay started the proceedings with the wicket of S. Alexander, and his new ball partner Dillon Heyliger dismissed R. Persaud in his third over. Third class never threatened a recovery as B. Haynes was the only batsman to go past 20. He made 22.
Legay finished with 2 for 12, Jeremiah Harris, 2-14, Randy Lindore 2-24, Dillon Heyliger 1 for 22 and Nakeitho Nestor 1 for 23.
In reply, GDF raced to 73 for the loss of Shemroy Barrington’s wicket at lunch. Barrington made 19.
Kevon Boodie and Marcus Watkins then came together to took their team to victory.
Boodie, who ended on 39 not out, finished the game with a six over long on as GDF raced to the target in only 10.5 overs. Watkins was not out on 27 with one four and two sixes.
In their match against the Guyana Industrial Corporation (GNIC), Third class won the toss and batted first and were dismissed for 145 in 34.2 overs after struggling at 20-3 at one stage.
Alvin Castello and Yovindra Ramanan however lifted Third Class to their eventual total with Castello top scoring with 46 from 74 balls.
He struck four sixes and a four, while Ramanan made 34 from 60 balls with 5 fours and a six.
For GNIC, Jermaine Grovesnor took 3 for 23, Leroy Bristol 2 for 26, and Matthew Marks 2 for 15.
In reply GNIC reached the required target in only 23.4 overs.
Premchand Sookdeo was the only wicket to fall, caught off Ray Bryan for 6 after which Elton Baker and Ranole Bourne batted with assurance to take GNIC through to the next round. Baker finished not out on 54 from 79 deliveries, with four fours and a six straight down the ground while Bourne finished not out on 54 as well, from 73 deliveries, striking seven fours and a six.
In a game initially scheduled to play at the University of Guyana ground, Gandhi Youth Organization (GYO) beat Ace Warriors instead at their home ground with the match being reduced to 42 overs per side.
GYO were aided by strong performances from their young players as Abilash Dookie and Leon Scott were both missing from the team.
GYO won the toss and batted first, but were bowled out for 258 with four deliveries left unused. They lost National Under 19 opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul for 17 ( three fours) with the score on 29 off the bowling of Clayon Douglas while Afzal Gafoor dismissed the other opener John Campayne for 38 an innings which included seven fours.
Kamesh Yadram made 28 with six fours as two wickets fell with the score on 110.
Three more wickets fell in the space of 25 runs before Under 19 players Ryan Shun and Shivnandan Roopnarine helped ensure GYO reached their respective total.
Shun made the top score of 54 not out with eight fours and Roopnarine, 48, also with eight boundaries.
GYO stumbled in the final over to be bowled out for 254 in 41.2 overs.
Douglas, 3-44, Gafoor, 3-42 and Dellon Azore 2 for 38 were the wicket-takers.
In their turn at the crease, Ace Warriors lost Rawle Enmore to a catch off seamer Garfield De Roach, who then dismissed Fredel Bess with the score on 24. Ronald Hercules and Steven Harris then took the score to 81 before Harris was dismissed for 32 with three sixes and two fours. This opened the floodgates for Ace Warriors as they lost their next six wickets for 20 runs. Their resistance effectively ended when Hercules was dismissed for 45 (with nine well placed fours) holing out off the bowling of Roopnarine, who picked up three wickets in an over and was also on a hat trick. With the win virtually secured, GYO allowed the last pair of Douglas and Azore to prolong the match as they dropped Azore twice and became casual in the field. In the end Ace Warriors were bowled out for 140 in 30.2 overs when Yadram bowled Azore for 17 to give GYO victory by 112 runs. De Roach finished with 2 for 31 but Pravindralall Persaud was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 8. Roopnarine capped a good game with 3 for 13.
GYO progresses to play DCC while Police will compete against Malteenoes and Transport against GNIC when the Queensway Cup continues next weekend.
