The Georgetown City Council will be distributing demand notices to property-owners for taxes in several city wards from Lacytown to Lamaha Gardens this week.
According to a press release from Debra Lewis, acting public relations officer for the City Council, notices will be sent off to property-owners in Newtown, Robbstown, Stabroek, Werk-en-Rust, Charlestown, Bel Air and Prashad Nagar this week. Notices have already been dispatched to property-owners in Kingston, and North and South Cummingsburg.
Lewis said the City Council urges property-owners to honour their civic responsibilities under the Municipal and District Councils Act, which states that where property-owners cannot be found, or where there are two or more persons in occupation, any one person shall be designated as owner by the Council.
Records at City Hall have revealed that some property-owners have not paid taxes for four years, she said, while noting that the situation has seriously inhibited the municipality’s ability to fulfil its mandate. When these sums are not paid, critical works in drainage, garbage collection and the provision of day care services are hampered, she pointed out.
Property-owners who are experiencing financial difficulties are invited to visit the Debt Recovery Unit located in the City Treasurer’s Department, where arrangements can be put in place to facilitate the payments of property taxes, Lewis added.
