Minister of Education Priya Manickchand lauded the top three students who wrote the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and their parents for investing in their education, when she presented them with laptop computers at her Brickdam office.
Michael Bhopaul, of Graham’s Hall Primary, and Ramesh Ghir, of Mae’s Under-12, topped the country with 547 marks, from a group of 17,000 students who wrote the NGSA on April 4 and 5. Roletta Barrow, of Success Elementary, came third with 546 marks, a press release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) said. The three students have all gained entrance into Queen’s College.
At the brief ceremony held on Monday, Manickchand lauded the students for their performance, while noting that they have made their parents proud. She also acknowledged that their success would have come after tremendous sacrifices would have been made for them to be educated.
The minister encouraged the students to continue on the path of success. “You get to choose whether you want to be somebody who is more interested in playing than you are in school or you will balance both and excel in both. Pay attention and listen to your teacher,” she urged them.
Manickchand further charged the students to focus on their education even as they pay attention to other matters. She also told them to make good use of the computer systems to aid in their studies and homework assignments and to help less fortunate persons who may not own a computer.
In response, the students expressed their gratitude for the computers and to the minister for her encouragement. They also pledged to continue to excel.
