Several passengers aboard a Route 47, East Ruimveldt- West Ruimveldt minibus which was travelling outside the designated route escaped serious injury last evening when the vehicle slammed into a car in Charlestown and turned turtle.
Eyewitnesses said that the bus BMM 3247 was proceeding east along Evans Street and jumped the Lyng Street right of way slamming into the White Toyota Raum car and turning turtle a short distance away in Evans Street.
“The bus speeding up the street and the driver get two other conductor boys them telling he fuh tek short cut . ‘Turn here, go through duh crack, turn back here’ and so they gat he and we speeding up that(Lyng) Street and Blam! Into the white car and the bus flip ” said passenger of the bus Alexis Mingo. Mingo was one of the lucky passengers who escaped injuries . However her granddaughter, nine-year- old Zalika Henry, a pupil of School of the Nations sustained a broken arm.
The conductor of the bus whose name was given only as “Jimmy” was rendered unconscious but when taken to the GPHC regained consciousness and was receiving medical attention up to press time.
Another passenger Gordon Williams said that after the collision the driver of the bus managed to escape unhurt and fled. “When the bus turn over everybody inside start screaming help! help! and everybody deh in some bad position so some people pull me and other people out and by this time the driver come out start holding he head like he get bazadee and then one screaming, run up the road, then he run back down and start hollering again then gone running like he mad”, he said.
Public-spirited persons rushed to the assistance of the packed bus and ten of the fifteen sought medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The driver of the car was taken to the Brickdam Police Station while ranks
from the police traffic department were at the GPHC taking statements from the passengers as investigations are continuing.
