North Ruimveldt Multilateral Secondary yesterday ran out winners of the track events segment of Zone One of the annual Inter-schools athletic championships at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
With a persistent presence in the races throughout the day, North Ruimveldt students battled against students from four other secondary schools of the South Georgetown District to gain 835 points by the end of the meet.
Their nearest rival, East Ruimveldt Secondary, finished with 621 points while Tucville Secondary ended with 575 points. Fourth place went to Central High School with 562 points while Ascension Secondary ended on 224 points.
David Rose, which also comes under this zone did not participate in the track events.
North Ruimveldt’s crowning performance came from Fitzroy Leitch who won the boys’ under 20 800 and 1500m events.
National athlete Dontay Thom of Tucville Secondary won the boys’ under 18 100 and 200m. He also managed to win the 800m.
Another national’s athlete, Tasnica Lovell stole the show in the girls under 16 category sprinting away with wins in the 100m and 200m races.
Meanwhile, Central High’s Claris McKoy walked away with the 800m and 1500m races in the girls under 14 category.
Yesterday’s start of the secondary school track events followed South Georgetown’s Primary School Inter-School Championships where South Ruimveldt Primary retained their title for a second consecutive year after gathering 362 points.
Sports Representative for District #13, Roydon Profitt, commented that he was very pleased with the support that the district has been receiving and commended the competitiveness of the athletes.
A number of entities came on board in sponsorship of the event including Star Party Rentals, GuyOil which sponsored trophies for the event, and Banks DIH which provided beverages for the event.
On behalf of the district, Profitt expressed gratitude to those who supported the event, especially the sponsors.
Competition in the South Georgetown District continues on October 23, when the Zone 2 track events will be held as scheduled at the same venue.
The ultimate Champions of Champions Inter Zone Championships will be held on October 25, also at the Police Sports Club Ground while the swimming segment will be held at the Colgrain Swimming Pool, on October 24 and the cycling portion will be held at the National Park Circuit on October 29.
Profitt said he was optimistic that the South Georgetown District will be able to better its last year’s performance at the National School’s Championships in November
“Based on what I’m seeing so far I think we will have a well rounded team, the rivalry is very intense and very competitive, and I think we can at least do better than we did last year,” Profitt said.
