Ketley Primary School will play its first match of the Courts Pee Wee championships on Saturday and according to Coach Philip Ferdinand they are in it to win it.
“I have high hopes of us coming out with the first victory and then take it from there,” Ferdinand said.
Speaking with the media yesterday, Ferdinand said he will be conducting the final trials today before naming the squad to represent the school.
According to Ferdinand, training sessions commenced last Friday with over 20 students of which 12 are still training with the possibility of being named in the final 10.
“We did some basic exercises, some of the rules, how to control the ball, how to pass the ball, how we will normally do our scoring based on what the judges told us,” he said.
Ferdinand said that selecting the final 10 players will be difficult as all 12 of the players have potential and also stand a chance of being selected.
While the rules stipulate that a must consist of only 10 players Ferdinand said that he nevertheless plans to take all 12 players to the game.
Ferdinand said selection was based on a simple principle.
“I selected students who have some knowledge of football, basically from the grade five and six who would have been playing street football while others are in clubs.”
He said the students are very enthusiastic and he knows that it will be worth their while.
Ketley will play St. Sidwell’s in the second of eight matches Saturday.
The tournament will commence with Marian Academy tackling St. Pius while in other scheduled matches, Green Acres will tackle Sophia, Tucville Primary will engage St. Gabriel’s, West Ruimveldt will play Success Academy, St. Margaret’s will clash with F.E. Pollard, South Ruimveldt will oppose Redeemer and North Georgetown will clash with Enterprise in the final match of round one.
The Primary Schools competition, which is organised by the Petra Organisation, will feature 16 teams from Georgetown and the West Bank of Demerara.
