-Digicel honours commitment to sponsor tourney
The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) national schools championships will get underway tomorrow at the National Gymnasium following yesterday’s sealing of the sponsorship deal between the communications giants and the GTTA.
The sponsorship deal was signed yesterday at Digicel’s Head Office, Kingston.
The three day tournament will see schools from Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 competing in the mini cadet, cadet and junior teams’ events.
According to Digicel Sponsorship Manager Gavin Hope, sponsorship of the tournament gives his company an opportunity to assist in the promotion of table tennis countrywide. “We want to take part in sporting activities that benefit us as an individual, anything that speaks about health and fitness, we want to be on board, Hope, himself a former national sprinter declared.
GTTA’s assistant/secretary Linden Johnson, who will co-ordinate the tournament, said that the tournament was aimed at affording students the opportunity to participate in table tennis both recreationally and competitively. They also hope to promote the basic objectives of the GTTA by creating avenues for a healthy lifestyle through the sport and to foster better camaraderie among the students. “We sincerely feel that this tournament can be successful in achieving its objectives if we put things in place from the beginning,” Johnson stated. The GTTA will coordinate the tournament fixtures and provide umpires, tables and balls among other resources to ensure the smooth running of the tournament, said Johnson.
The four divisions to be contested are 11 years and under, 13 years and under, 15 years and under and 18 years and under. Prizes in the forms of trophies and medals will be given out to the first three finishers in each category, the most outstanding male and female players, the most improved male and female players, the best dressed school and the most discipline school.
