Rawle Blackman, who was allegedly caught trying to ship ganja in a bottle of peanut butter through the Ogle Airport, was yesterday remanded to prison.
Blackman, 25, of South Ruimveldt, pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation against Blackman, a carpenter/joiner, is thaton October 17, he had in his possession 106 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking, at Ogle Airport.
According to Prosecutor Kerry Bostwick, Blackman travelled to the Ogle Airport to ship a box containing a number of food items to an unmentioned location. The box bore the name “Roy John Attoo” and he allegedly informed the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) officers that it was his name.
Bostwick said the CANU ranks realized that the box did not have a receiving name or address of destination and they proceeded with a search, which uncovered a sealed bottle of peanut butter that contained a leaves and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The CANU officers then questioned Blackman again and according to Bostwick, he responded, “Is a Muslim brethren that give me the box to send to Imbaimadai.”
Blackman was subsequently arrested and charged.
Bostwick noted that Blackman provided the police with an address to an abandoned location and therefore had no fixed place of abode. As a result, the Chief Magistrate refused bail for the accused. The case was transferred to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court for October 23, for reports and fixtures.
