The organising committee of the Annual Inter-Market Futsal Tournament said this year’s tournament will be postponed until March 2013 as the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall needs urgent repairs. At a press briefing held at the Sports Hall, Tournament Coordinator O’Neil Durant said the Stabroek Warriors Sport Club had requested and was given permission to host the competition at the venue in August 2011 but it needed urgent repairs and he was advised to reschedule for November.
Permission was then given for November 6 but due to the hosting of the Indian Science Fair and further maintenance work on the floor the event was again delayed. On October 5, Durant said a letter from the National Sports Commission informed him that the venue would no longer be available. “This has cause the game some sort of disappointment…the players are more disappointed than us,” he said, adding that the organising committee cannot remedy the situation. “We would not be able to use this venue until 2013 around March.”
Durant is urging sponsors and participating market teams to prepare for next year. He said the tournament secured about 20 market teams and it was expected to be bigger and better than last year’s competition which only attracted 14 teams. “Nevertheless we are seeing great responses and people are coming out so we are asking for them to bear with us until next year,” he said.
The Committee also announced that Futsal is planning to host a Regional Inter- Market tournament on Tuesday July 31, 2014 which will give more Caribbean countries a chance to contest the event. This competition would see teams coming from across Guyana, from as far as Bartica, New Amsterdam, Parika, Wales, Buxton, and Melanie Damishana, and others.
