Golfers from Canada and the United States have confirmed their participation for this year’s staging of the Digicel Golf Classic said Secretary of the Lusignan Golf Course, David Mohamed.
He, however, said the executives of the Course are yet to receive confirmation from golfers from Trinidad and Suriname.
Mohamed said golfers from Trinidad and Suriname still have some time to confirm their participation in the competition.
Mohamed suggested that the delay in confirmation from the Trinidadians and Surinamese probably had to do with the fact that most of them are business oriented and as such would have to wait until the time is close before they can confirm their participation.
Nevertheless, the organisers would have liked to have the participators confirm at least two days in advance.
This tournament according to Mohamed is usually one of the biggest tournaments on the golf calendar with this year being no different as a large number of golfers are expected to compete.
Since the involvement of the phone giant, Mohamed said that the sport has increased in size along with significant improvement in the sport.
“Without their support we would not be able to have this tournament that we are having now,” he said.
Joaan Deo, a member of the Lusignan Golf Club said this tournament was one that a number of players prepare for.
“It’s a highly anticipated event because its one week before the Guyana Open and we usually have foreigners coming in to participate.”
This tournament says Deo and fellow golfer Alfred Mentore, is used by many golfers to prepare for the annual Guyana Open. Quite a few golfers especially the overseas golfers get the opportunity to test the ground before competing in the prestigious Guyana Open.
Deo, however, said once again there will be limited female participation in the tournament this year again. Last year’s tournament saw some five females competing, two of whom were from Suriname.
Digicel’s Sponsorship and Events Manager Gavin Hope said the cell phone giant is pleased to be associated with the tournament and is satisfied with the progress that has been made since its initial investment.
“Over the last four years you would have seen a lot of stars born, a lot of young players getting involved and we will continue to support it, because as we will always say we are here for the development of any sport and any activity that is going to be fruitful and constructive.”
Hope explained that over the years the standard of the sport has been lifted and said he hopes that they executive of the Lusignan Golf Course can progress with the aim of expanding the sport annually.
The two day tournament starts on October 27 at the Lusignan Golf Course.
