The Latin name Pentas refers to the plant’s five petalled flowers. This easily grown and sun-loving plant with its rich green foliage originated in East Africa. It is grown for its multitude of red, pink and white flowers which bloom all year round.
Individual flowers have a long tube at one end with five star-shaped petals.
In the centre of each ‘star’ is a small white eye. The entire plant is covered with small white hairs, and the leaves are about four inches long and have veins which are easily seen.
Pentas can be grown in pots, window boxes or borders.
Remember to trim the plants to keep them attractive. For an aesthetic display of colours try grouping several plants of reds, pinks and whites together in a white pot. Pinch the tips to encourage bushing. Water daily, and feed once a week with Miracle Gro Bloom Booster. When out of bloom use Miracle Gro All Purpose.
Pentas can be grown from cuttings. Remove the bottom leaves and dip the stems into rooting hormone and place in a mixture of Pro Mix and sand. It will root in approximately one to two weeks.
Until next week, Happy Gardening!
