Sophia Special School, North Georgetown, Marian Academy, St. Margaret’s and Redeemer Primary Schools all secured victories when the Courts sponsored Pee Wee football tournament commenced at the Thirst Park ground yesterday.
Sophia Special School inflicted a 6 -0 drubbing on Green Acres Primary School with goals coming from Leon Arthur in the third and 19th minutes, James Freeman in the fourth, sixth and 13th minutes followed by Quincy Felix in the 29th minute.
Marian Academy defeated a goalless St. Pius 7-0 with Diarra Thomas netting a helmet trick.
Thomas scored in the ninth, 12th, 17th and 25th minutes while Dominic Roberts scored in the 38th minute.
St. Pius contributed to their 7-nil drubbing with two own goals.
Ketley Primary and St. Sidwell’s played at a 2-2 draw with goals from Shawn Henry and Jahine Massiah in the third and 12th minutes for Ketley Primary while Samuel Devonshire and Omar Bascom scored in the 21st and 30th minutes.
St. Margaret’s defeated F.E. Pollard 3-1. Moses Bhagwanden with two goals in the 11th and 13th minutes and Joshia King in the 17th minute scored for St. Margaret’s while Troy Maynard scored the lone goal for F.E Pollard in the second minute.
Redeemer Primary came back to secure a 2-1 victory over South Ruimveldt Primary. Both goals for Redeemer Primary came off the boots of Shemar Dover while Christopher Bovell scored for South Ruimveldt Primary in the 17th minute.
The match between Success Elementary and West Ruimveldt Primary ended in a 1-1 draw with Garrick Persaud and Japheth Singh scoring in the 22nd and 10th minutes for Success Elementary and West Ruimveldt Primary respectively.
And North Georgetown defeated Enterprise 3-0 with Tyrese Prescott in the 15th, Owen Williams in the 23rd and Joshua Denny in the 27th minute the goal scorers.
The competition continues next Saturday at Thirst Park with round two.
Speaking to the media, one of the organisers Marlan Cole said they are still dumbfounded as to the level of play they witnessed from the under-11 players.
“When we initially started the tournament the thinking was that these school teams they are not existing clubs nor traditional clubs and therefore the schools fielding at team at this level might be challenging but we were surprised with the response we got from the school. Each and every one of the invited schools invited were here today (yesterday) and participated in high and good spirit and so that in itself is pleasing and satisfying and therefore we know for sure at Petra that this competition can only get better.”
Courts Managing Director Molly Hassan in an invited comment, said she was pleased with the support the tournament has received from parents especially those who were there cheering on their children as they played. That she said is what the tournament is about bring families together and while the children are involved in good clean fun.
