The family of the 33-year-old teacher, who died as she was being transported to the Georgetown Hospital subsequent to giving birth at the New Amsterdam Hospital, is yet to be contacted by the latter hospital and told what transpired prior to the woman’s death.
Kaimattie Sooknanan, of Number 68 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, died on her way to the Georgetown Public Hospital on Saturday morning after she delivered her second child by caesarean section at the New Amsterdam Hospital on Friday. Her baby boy is said to be healthy but remains at the GPH. Mrs. Sooknanan was declared as being in a stable condition by doctors at New Amsterdam after the delivery.
“The hospital nah inform me… them leff me alone just like that… Them aint tell nobody nothing. Me aint know what happen to my wife, why she had to get operation, why she had to get transfer, nothing. It’s very painful,” the dead woman’s husband, Raj Sooknanan, told Stabroek News yesterday.
The man said he went to the Georgetown Hospital’s mortuary yesterday morning to identify his wife and to confirm for himself that she was indeed dead. “I couldn’t believe. Me see she and I still can’t believe. I leff she good, good,” the man lamented.
The man said on Saturday when he had his last conversation with his wife she appeared in perfect health and he did not suspect that anything could have possible been wrong.
Asked about his son, the man said he is in perfect health but he is unaware of when the child will be discharged.
Sooknanan said he is not looking to take further action in the matter for the time being but only wants to focus on cremating his wife, pointing out that the post-mortem examination is to be conducted today. When that process is over with, he said he will decide on a way forward.
