Dear Editor,
I am sick and tired of the lawlessness that is going on in this country. For too long now we the decent people have been complaining of noise nuisance to the Sparendaam Police but nothing was ever done to put an end to this illegal activity. We have written several letters to the Minister of Home Affairs, but this good gentleman has also done absolutely nothing.
Prior to the 2011 Elections the Minister visited several areas on the East Coast, here again we made our complaints that whenever we call on the Police they always make excuses that they don’t have a driver, or the vehicle is on patrol and when they come back they will inform them, (it seems the patrol never comes back). Sometimes the police would say that “oh, the people have permit and they can make noise till 12 midnight.” Minister Rohee defends his police by saying “I don’t believe my police would indulge in such a thing,” then goes on to tell us how much money his government has spent on the police force, then goes on to quote the noise nuisance law. As law abiding citizens, we are quite aware of the laws of this country. If the police were doing their job we would have never been in this cesspool.
Now Editor let me explain in case people do not know why this issue of noise nuisance is so widespread and the police have turned a blind eye. This is what happens, the boom box owners and the DJ organize with some top ranks of the police force to obtain permits to carry on these lawless activities especially on weekends, in some cases they don’t have to get permission because the police protects them, so when you make a complaint to the Sparendaam police station the junior rank makes all sorts of excuses to cover up and tells you the patrol will be there shortly.
These organizers find all kinds of names for their events, such as black and white party, short skirt party, village day, reunion and anything to suit the occasion. If that is not enough there is also a big party for the DJ’s birthday and Bar-B-Que to wash down. It must be noted that these music sets consist of huge speaker boxes stacked as least 15 feet high and the pounding and torturing goes on until 3 am into the next day.
Selling alcohol and food and playing loud and lawless music which can be heard one and a half miles away is lucrative business, the police only have to play blind and deaf and everything is ok.
Editor why must we be made to suffer and have our rights violated by having sleepless nights enduring tasteless pounding and irritating noise emanating from these bubble sessions. Why can’t we enjoy the peace and comfort of our homes listening to our own music and television rather than have the zinc on our roofs vibrate, our windows rattle and our cabinets jingle. This nonsense must stop; we must be able to live in peace. These people are selling alcohol to under-aged children and are allowed to get away with it.
So you see Editor, the poor little constable taking your report cannot go above his boss because his boss and other colleagues are at the party collecting, or sometimes have their share sent over.
The law is the law and noise nuisance is an offence, so why give permission to break the law? By the way, there is no law that says that once permission is given you can continue to make noise if a complaint is made to the police. The police have a right to act based on that complaint and have the music lowered or even turned off if possible. I’m calling on the Commissioner (ag) and the Commander ‘C Division to ban all open air bubble sessions and revoke all permits granted. I know of instances where this occurred especially with this particular stereo set owner that will be pounding down at Ogle Community Centre ground on the 27th of October.
To all the decent people affected, speak out; it’s your democratic right to live in the peace and comfort of your own home.
Yours faithfully,
