Honing environment reporting skills: A dozen journalists from across the Caribbean participated in the United Nations Environ-ment Programme (UNEP)-sponsored training seminar “Caribbean Journalist Workshop: Challenges for the Environment and the Ozone Layer” which was held in Nassau, The Bahamas last week.The aim of the workshop was to strengthen skills on environmental journalism, provide media professionals with relevant information, tools and inputs for transmitting messages related to environment protection and governance in the countries of the Caribbean. The workshop also focused on the Montreal Protocol for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, as well as on the main messages of the fifth Global Environment Outlook report (GEO-5), which examines the state and trends of the environment.The workshop was the first ever organized by UNEP for journalists in the English-speaking Caribbean. Participants were selected on a competitive basis. Stabroek News journalist Gaulbert Sutherland was the lone participant selected from Guyana.Facilitators included representatives from UNEP’s regional office as well as the United Nations Information Centre.
