GBTI Annual Impromptu Speech Competition
The Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) says St Joseph High School is the first to advance to the second round in its Annual Impromptu Speech Competition for Secondary Schools which started on Tuesday.
St Joseph, the defending champions, earned 622 points in its match against the West Demerara Secondary. Its student, James Grant was chosen as the Best Speaker of that match for his presentation on the topic ‘Computers are more beneficial to education than books.’ In the second round Mae’s Secondary School won with 694 points against School of the Nations which gained 680 points. Mae’s Shivani Prashad was named Best Speaker for her presentation on the topic ‘Who would you like to be for one day and why.’
In a press release, GBTI said this is the fifth year that it is hosting the competition in keeping with its aim to preserve the art of impromptu speech among youth people. Twenty-two schools from regions three and four are expected to compete against each other including Annandale Secondary, Bishop’s High, Central High, Christ Church Secondary, Covent Garden Secondary, Cummings Lodge Secondary, Diamond Secondary, Leonora Secondary, Mae’s High, Marian Academy, Patentia Secondary, President’s College, Queen’s College, Richard Ishmael Secondary, St John’s College, St Rose’s High School, St Stanislaus College, Stewartville Secondary, West Demerara Secondary and Zeeburg Secondary.
