The final group of athletes to represent the South Georgetown District (Number 13) at this year’s National School’s track and field championships will be determined today as the decisive Champion-of-Champions track meet gets underway at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary.
The best athletes from 12 of the 13 schools that fall under the South Georgetown district will have a last chance to prove their worth and earn a spot at representing the district next month at the National Stadium when the National School’s Championships takes place.
Today’s Champion-of-Champions track meet will involve athletes from both zones one and two, who managed to place at least first, second or third in an event at the Inter Schools championships.
The battle will be on between North Ruimveldt Multilateral Secondary and Dolphin Secondary, who were the respective winners of two zones.
Some 27 athletes will be representing Dolphin’s while North Ruimveldt will field 26 athletes.
Charlestown Secondary, which finished behind Dolphin’s in the Zone Two Inter School championships, will field 22 students in today’s competition while East Ruimveldt, runners up in the Zone One championships, will have 19 students participating today.
The competition is expected to be fierce as Dolphin’s Tiffany Carto takes on Alzemo Britton from Tucville Secondary along with Central High’s Deon Pompey, East Ruimveldt’s Raunsel Ramsay and Lodge Secondary’s Lerleen Gordon in the girls’ 100m dash.
Carto, Britton, Gordon and Ramsay will face off again in the 200m where they will be joined by North Ruimveldt’s Leimaka Craig.
Charlestown’s Tirana Mitchell, of zone one, will clash with zone two’s Princess Farley in the girls’ Under-16 100m, a race that will also include Charlestown’s Mearisha Carter, Dolphin’s Anastacia Ifill and North Ruimveldt’s Melanie Pilgrim. Mitchell qualified for the event after placing first at the zone one championships last week Wednesday.
Mitchell will also be in the 200m coming up against Charlestown’s Brittany London, Central High’s Angela Williams, Freeburg Secondary’s Merica Jowanza, and Caramel Secondary’s Nicola Pompey.
In the boys’ category, Charlestown’s Alwayne Primo and Dolphin’s Dennis Yorrick of zone two, will contest the boys’ Under-18 100m against Ascension’s Abdul Akeem, Shemar Andres and Osaiyah Jones from East Ruimveldt and North Ruimveldt’s Stephon George, all of zone one.
