The space afforded the Guyana Shop in the rebuilt complex housing the New Guyana Marketing Corporation (New GMC) now better positions the entity to provide prominent display space for locally manufactured agro-products seeking enhanced access to both local and overseas markets.
Stabroek Business has learnt that the completely re-designed Guyana Shop currently provides shelf space for 48 local agro-processors and New GMC General Manager Nizam Hassan told Stabroek Business that the entity was open to engaging other agro-processors from across the country desirous of securing markets for their products either locally, in the region, or further afield.
Hassan had previously told Stabroek Business about the linkages which the New GMC had established with exporters seeking access to Guyanese products. He said that while the Guyana Shop would serve as an outlet for products received from local agro-processors, its primary objectives was to expand the range of locally produced food products available on the regional and international markets.
And while, according to Hassan, the re-opening of the Guyana Shop should not be seen as an attempt by the New GMC to compete with the private sector, the company will remain committed to “providing more shelf space for local products” and otherwise marketing those products. The part of the New GMC’s focus was on making local manufacturers aware of the facility and the kinds of services which it seeks to offer.
Hassan said that one of New GMC’s concerns was with supporting local agro-processors seeking to enhance their levels of preparedness to access international markets. The support which the New GMC seeks to offer will come through its collaboration with local umbrella business organisations and regional and international support agencies that have the capacity to improve product appeal by the quality of packaging and labelling.
