Chelsea Edghill yesterday validated her world ranking as she spearheaded Bishops’ High School to the most outstanding school title when the curtain was pulled on the third annual Digicel sponsored schools table tennis teams’ tournament at the National Gymnasium.
Edghill, with a world ranking of 1045, yesterday won two singles matches and teamed up with former Caribbean U-13 finalist Jamaal Duff in the doubles to defeat Queen’s College by three matches to one in the final of the 15-years and under teams.
Opening the tie, Edghill brushed aside Ryan `Smurf’ Narine 3-0 winning 11-4, 11-5, 11-5 as Narine failed throughout the encounter to find an answer to Edghill’s reverse backspin serves.
However, Queen’s College managed to level the score when Shemar Britton defeated Duff, 11-8, 11-9, 12-10.
Edghill and Duff gave Bishops’ the lead with an 11-2, 11-8, 11-9 win in the doubles before Edghill saving the best for last, wrapped up the tie with a 12-10, 15-13, 7-11, 11-5 win over Britton.
In the third place play-off, New Amsterdam Multilateral defeated Bartica `A’ 3-1.
Earlier in the semi-finals, New Amsterdam Multilateral lost 2-3 to Bishops’ while Queen’s College made light work of Bartica `A’ winning 3-0. Completed last weekend when the competition commenced were the 13-years-and-under and the 11-years-and-under finals.
The 13-years-and-under final was won by Marian Academy’s Priscilla Greaves and Kristie Lopes by a 3-2 margin over North Georgetown’s Tyriq Saunders and Neveah Clarkston while Mae’s Jeremy Singh, Niron Bissu and Kaysan Ninvalle defeated North Georgetown’s Saunders and Clarkston 3-2 in the 11-years-and-under-final.
Edghill was later voted the most outstanding female player with Britton being given the nod on the male side.
Kristie Lopes was adjudged the most improved female player and Sheldon Atherley of Bartica, the most improved male player. First time entrants Anandale Secondary was adjudged the most disciplined school and Marian Academy, the best dressed school.
