Telecommunication giants Digicel have aligned themselves with yet another athletics fraternity.
Last Thursday, the company declared its support for the Seventh-Day Adventist Youth Congress Sports slated to start tonight from 20:00hrs at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
The event, which was last year renamed the Pastor Ashton Alleyne Memorial Athletics Championships, is touted to be the biggest athletics event after the School’s Nationals track and field championships while boasting some of Guyana’s top athletes.
The event is also similar to that of the School’s Nationals in that it has 18 districts/federations around Guyana which have their own in house sports before the national event.
At Thursday’s press conference held at the Seventh-Day Adventist headquarters in Queenstown, president of the Guyana Conference of Seventh Day Adventists, Richard James, indicated his heartfelt thanks to Digicel for coming on board with the event.
“I want to thank telecommunication giants Digicel, the bigger, better network, for their sponsorship of the annual Ashton Alleyne Memorial Athletics Championship. Every year we gather some part of the country where all the federations will bring their membership and we meet for a time of spiritual revival.
“This year we are glad that Digicel can join with us in this endeavour and we trust that the collaboration with Digicel will serve well in motivating our young people to strive for success,” James stated at the press briefing.
According to another director for the event, Martin Smith, the event, which will be held under the theme ‘In his image for his glory’ will be a two-day meet starting tonight from 20:00hrs and finishing off tomorrow.
However, out of the 18 federations, only 15 will be participating. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony, is expected to speak at tonight’s opening.
Additionally, new aspects will be added to the event such as cricket ball throws for smaller children along with invitational events for non-Adventist.
The coordinators of the event, Anson Ambrose and Branford Burke, also happens to be associated with the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG).
